Jubilee
The Yubileyny diamond mine, which is commonly known as Jubilee, is located in Sakha, Russian Federation, and is the biggest diamond mine in the world. The open-pit diamond mine has been in production since 1986 and has diamond reserves of more than 150 million carats.
The mine is owned and operated by Aikhal Mining and Processing, which is a division of Russia’s state-owned diamond company Alrosa.
Udachny
The world’s second largest diamond mine is also located in the Yakutia region of Russia. The Udachny mine is owned by Alrosa. It is also one of the deepest open pit mines in the world. The mine is going through a transition from open pit mining to underground mining as the open pit reserves decline.
Mir
Mirny, often referred to as Mir is the world’s third biggest diamond mine with respect to estimated diamond reserves. The Mirny mining and processing division of Alrosa owns and operates the mine. The mine was discovered in 1955 when open-pit mining continued in it for 2 years. The mine now uses underground mining for the production of diamonds since 2009.
The three diamond mines are the world’s biggest mines when it comes to the reserves of diamonds expected to be available in the mines. While the largest mine by area is the Orapa diamond mine, it is estimated to contain approximately 85.7 million carats and is one of the oldest mining sites owned by Debswana, a partnership between De Beers and the government of Botswana.
